Gus & Gertie – Taylored Expressions

Photo Aug 19, 6 49 12 AM

The adventures of Gus & Gertie continue! Now they are riding through a flower bed on Gus’ scooter!

Quick Tips:

  • I used the Doodle Flowers background to fill in the scene but masked off the top flowers.
  • You might want to color in the flowers to add a little more pop, but I liked leaving Gus and Gertie as the stars of this show! (Plus it’s quicker)
  • Some soft blue and green blending give the impression of sky and grass but still keep things light and bright!

A-roar-able Friends – My Favorite Things for Crafty Meraki

Photo Aug 09, 8 57 35 AM

Images that are just the right size to hold their own on a simple card front with a sentiment are some of my favorites!!

Photo Aug 09, 8 57 10 AM

Quick Tips:

  • These dinosaurs are simple enough to fussy cut – just use a black marker to run along the edges for a finished look.
  • Adding a very faint shadow under each image (I used C1 and C00 markers) and popping up the fussy cut images, gives just enough dimension to make these cards special.
  • My go to color scheme is usually pretty bright but I wasn’t sure if that was the direction I wanted to go here so it was Pinterest to the rescue! In this case, I tried searching for “dinosaur images” and found a perfect muted color scheme. Sometimes I also try searches like “illustrations” or “cartoons” depending on the look I’m going for.

Wild Birthday – Sunny Studios for Crafty Meraki

Photo Aug 09, 8 53 47 AM

This Savanna Safari stamp set from Sunny Studio makes me think of the Madagascar movies (I really should have found a spot for the hippo!).

Quick Tips:

  • Adding some faint ink blending gives the hint of scene while still keeping the card light and bright.
  • I chose to mask the lion for this scene but you could also use the coordinating dies to add an extra layer of dimension.
  • Try turning the border stamp from the Sunny Studio Tropical Scenes set and stamping in sections to fit around your animals and sentiment – you don’t have to use the entire image!
  • I added small dots with the tip of my Copic markers (the same colors I used for the lion) to create “dirt” to ground each of the animals in the scene.

You’re Sealiously Awesome – Sunny Studios for Crafty Meraki

Hello! This is Samantha welcoming you to my very first blog post as a member of the Crafty Meraki design team!

Today’s card is created with some incredibly cute products from Sunny Studios available on the Crafty Meraki website:

Photo Aug 04, 3 21 11 PM

Quick Tips:

  • I started by blending the background using a DIY stencil made from thin plastic sheets (check the art supply section at your local craft store or Amazon) and an oval die. You could also use masking paper or one of the ready made shape stencils available on the market.
  • I find creating little “mini-scenes” like this one using an ink blended or stamped shape much easier to complete than a full card front scene!
  • Distress Oxide ink colors used for the background include Mermaid Lagoon and Blueprint Sketch (for the water) along with Picked Raspberry and Squeezed Lemonade for the sky.
  • The images from the Sunny Studios Sealiously Sweet and Tropical Scenes sets were stamped and colored using Copic markers.
  • I chose to fussy cut my images and pop them up with foam tape but you could also mask the images and make this a one layer card.
  • Consider making a set of matching cards using this format but changing up the seal image used and sky and water colors – it would be an adorable gift!

Grumpy Cat – Taylored Expressions

Photo Aug 04, 3 27 21 PM

I love finding fun and unexpected ways to combine stamp sets I already own!

Quick Tips:

  • The sentiment on this card wasn’t made for the Big Grumpy line – it came from Handmade Humor (a previous “free with purchase” set).
  • The “bushes” on this card are actually the leafy portion of the tree from the Treetop Background set, just flipped over!
  • The cloud background was created using the MFT Mini Cloud stencil and Speckled Egg Distress Oxide ink (my new favorite sky color!)

Happy Birthday – Three Room Studios

2020-08 TRS Birthday Hop

So excited to be celebrating the 5th birthday of Three Room Studios today!! Sandy Boone is as talented of an artist as she is a wonderful human being! It’s been an honor to work with her so I wanted to pull out all the stops for this one – get your masking paper ready!!

Quick tips:

  • I start scenes like this by stamping on a piece of copy paper cut to A2 size.  I don’t worry about masking, just getting the placement right.
  • I then place that “sample” in my Misti to line up the stamps, starting in the front (in this case the cat and plant).
  • For the “desk”, I used the bottom half of the cubicle – to get a clean stamp, I put tape over the top half, ink it and remove the tape before stamping.
  • See product list below for details on stamps used.

Thanks so much for stopping by! And if you didn’t arrive here from Instagram, be sure to check out my account there for a hop of super talented artists celebrating the big day!

Flurry of Winter Wishes – Taylored Expressions

Photo Jul 26, 8 41 26 AM

I haven’t been able to step away from the new Frosty Kit from Taylored Expressions!

I’m pretty sure the little guy in the upper corner is supposed to be singing but he also looks a little surprised about being upside down, don’t you think?

Quick tips:

  • After cutting a few random circles from a card front, I lightly penciled them onto the card base and chose a few winter colors of Distress Oxide Ink (Tumbled Glass, Mermaid Lagoon and Shaded Lilac) to add some color behind the circle.
  • In this case, I used blender brushes to get a nice fade back to white in each circle.
  • If you’re nervous about blending into the other circles (I was), just use post it notes to cover the circles as you go.
