Newton’s Nook Designs June Release and Giveaway – Day 4

Hello friends and welcome to the final preview before the Newton’s Nook June release! Today is all about roundabouts!

All new products for this release will be available for purchase on Friday June 18th!

My first project uses the new BBQ Roundabout stamp set:

Even though there are a bunch of great sentiments that come with this set, I saw beer and meat and said – Father’s Day card!

I had so much fun coloring this image! Sometimes I really like coloring things where the color is known and I don’t have to pick – like what other colors would I choose for watermelon, hot dogs or hamburgers?

Once it was all colored, I die cut with the Circle Frames Die Set.

I wanted to create a background that looked like a red and white checkered tablecloth. I originally thought about using red gingham patterned paper but I didn’t have any. So I started looking through my stencils and thought this Basketweave Stencil from the Easter release might just work. And I think it did!

After I attached the circle using foam adhesive, I added a sentiment banner using the Banner Trio Die Set and the Mom & Dad Stamp Set.

Next up is the Seashell Roundabout (and I’m going to admit my favorite card of this release):

I love hunting for shells and this image reminded me of finding a cluster of shells just waiting to be found so I wanted this to look like shells on a beach! I also wanted to do something a little different then just a single stamped image for this one and get a little messy!

I’m going to do my best to give some tips on creating this card but I do want to give credit to the Distress Ink Techniques class created by Jenn Shurkus. I don’t think I would have created an effect like this before I took that class. I participated live, but you can still purchase a recording on her website and I highly recommend it!

I used Distress watercolor cardstock for my background and started by embossing with white (or clear) embossing powder along the bottom and top two corners.

Now for the fun part – let’s smoosh some ink! Since you can layer Distress Ink, I did this one color at a time. I started with the water section using Tumbled Glass (which you could probably skip as I don’t think you see much of it in the finished card), Peacock Feathers, Salty Ocean and Blueprint Sketch Distress Oxide inks. You use the same technique just cover a little less area each time.

Smoosh some ink onto a non-porous surface (a glass mat or Ranger craft mat would both work), spray the ink with water and then start dabbing your cardstock into it. Once you’re happy with the effect, dry it with a heat gun and then move on to the next color.

I did the same for the “sand” section using Antique Linen, Frayed Burlap and Vintage Photo Distress Oxide inks.

This is one of those techniques that looks complicated but is so fun and easy once you get the hang of it! And if you’re not getting the results you want, try Jenn’s class, it will be money well spent!

I obviously didn’t want to cover up much of this background so I just added a sentiment die cut with the Banner Trio Die Set and added a few iridescent bubbles to finish this card.
